McGovern wins HEED Award for Top Colleges for Diversity

INSIGHT Into Diversity has named McGovern Medical School as one of its recipients of the 2021 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award.

“This national recognition reflects the amazing work of our diversity and inclusion team led by Dr.LaTanya Loveand the supportive nature of the McGovern community, which is a fundamental value of this medical school,” saidRichard Andrassy, MD, executive deanad interimof McGovern Medical School.

The HEED Award is the only national honor recognizing U.S. medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, nursing, veterinary, allied health, and other health school and centers that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion across their campuses. The 51 honorees will be featured in the December 2021 issue ofINSIGHT Into Diversitymagazine.

“The inauguralOffice of Diversity and Inclusionhas worked extremely hard over the past few years to make sure McGovern Medical School has an inclusive environment where all of our students, residents, faculty, and staff, are welcomed and valued,” said Love, executive vice president for Student Affairs and Diversity. “Diversity and Inclusion is the work of each and every one of us and this award is a testament to the value that all MMS stakeholders place on diversity. We are so fortunate to have an amazing team working on our D&I efforts and especiallyDr. Asia McCleary-Gaddy, director for Diversity and Inclusion, who worked extremely hard on our HEED Award application.”

The HEED Award is open to all colleges and university across the U.S. and Canada and measures an institution’s level of achievement and intensity of commitment in regard to broadening diversity and inclusion on campus through initiatives, programs, and outreach.

“The Health Professions HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees – and best practices for both – continued leadership, support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” saidLenore Pearlstein, publisher ofINSIGHT Into Diversitymagazine.

“We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a Health Professions HEED Award Recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for schools where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus.”
