Mission Statement

The Graduate Student Education Committee seeks to raise the level of awareness of graduate education at the Medical School with the goal of contributing to the long-range development of the student and ultimately, the early career researcher. In conjunction with the MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealthGraduate School of Biomedical Sciences,the Committee fosters and encourages the creation of educational opportunities and the strengthening of social networks.

OurCareer Development Programsinclude seminars that focus on alternative and traditional career choices. Speakers have ranged from former Directors of the National Science Foundation and Editors of major peer-reviewed journals to congressional legislative representatives.

We also sponsor theDean’s Research Scholarship Awardsthat grant five scholarships per year to students who have successfully advanced to Ph.D. candidacy and have demonstrated academic and research excellence.

The annualGraduate Student Education Committee Poster Competitionis held each year at the Annual McGovern Medical School Research Retreat and allows students to present current research and gain invaluable presentation skills. Prizes range from $200–$400.

In addition, we offer atravel awardprogram for pre and post-candidacy graduate students to help defray the costs of attending conferences and professional training courses. These competitive awards are made available to students who have been invited to attend training courses or present papers at national or international conferences or meetings related to their academic area or dissertation research.

Ourgrant award bonusprogram provides The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences students with McGovern Medical School and IMM advisors a one-time $250.00 grant award bonus.

Through the efforts of the Office of Research Affairs, many other opportunities exist for professional development such as:

  • Collaborative Workshops

Membership

All members of the Graduate Student Education Committee (GSEC) are members of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
Faculty membership in the GSEC is determined based on the recommendations of the Committee on Committees with approval from the academic program directors and the Dean.
Student members are appointed by the program directors.
