UTHealth Houston welcomes 10 new Development Board members

Ten new members joined the ranks of the UTHealth Houston Development Board during the group’s meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 26. Under the leadership of Virginia L. (Ginni) Mithoff, Development Board chair, this group of more than 150 innovators and leaders from various fields comes together with a passion for the mission of UTHealth Houston. By drawing awareness to the university’s work and increasing philanthropic support, they champion the causes of health education, research, and patient care and help shape the future of the institution.

San Diego, Texas is a quiet two-stoplight town with a strong history in agriculture, ranching, and oil and gas. It’s the kind of place where neighbors know neighbors, and people look out for one another. It’s also a place where health disparities are visible, and the hometown of Melissa Valerio-Shewmaker, PhD, an associate professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston).





Scuba diver back to doing what she loves, thanks to heart procedure

When she isn't working at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), 55-year-old Caroline Wolbrecht of Houston loves to scuba dive.

However, that hobby was put in jeopardy due to a patent foramen ovale (PFO), a heart condition that she didn't even know she had for years.



Texas Health Informatics Alliance launches, opens registration for first conference

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) has joined forces with two other University of Texas System institutions to form the Texas Health Informatics Alliance (THIA), which aims to enhance health informatics across the state through partnerships in research, data, policy, education, standards, and workforce development.
