These admission factors are not assigned a specific weight or point value. The School of Nursing considers the totality of each application andgives consideration to several factors.

The Review and Notification Process

After submission, the application and all supporting materials will be delivered to the Cizik School of Nursing Student Affairs Office. Files marked as complete will be forwarded to the faculty for review. Select students will be invited for interview; writing samples may be required at the time of interview. Once interviews are conducted, the faculty will make admission decisions; at that time the file can be accepted, denied, or waitlisted. All candidates are notified via postal mail and email. The decision will also be available for view through the MyUTH portal.

Admissions FAQ

GRE
  • The Program prefers and strongly recommends a score of 500 or greater on each of the Verbal and Quantitative sections and a minimum score of 3.5 on the written section. For the Revised GRE the recommended score is: 151 Verbal; 144 Quantitative; with the written section remaining at 3.5.
Work Experience Requirement
  • At least one year of clinical experience in a critical care setting is required. Clinical experience involving invasive hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive drip initiation and titration, and management of ventilated patients is preferred. These clinical areas include: CVICU, SICU, CCU, MICU, NICU (Level IV only), PICU as well as trauma and burn intensive care units. Emergency room, PACU, and cardiac cath. lab experience does not meet the critical care requirement for admission.
  • You may apply before obtaining the full one year of critical care experience. However, this requirement must be met and verified before enrolling in the program.
Prerequisite Courses
  • A semester of organic or biochemistry is required for admission. The chemistry requirement must have been met within the last 5 years (from the time of application) and must be at an academic level above an introductory organic or biochemistry class. To have the most competitive application it is strongly recommended to have this requirement complete prior to application. However, you may apply without having this criteria satisfied. If you are accepted to the program missing this requirement your admission is contingent upon successful completion of this course prior to the start of the semester.
  • It is required that the organic or biochemistry have an earned B or higher to be competitive in the UTHealth Nurse Anesthesia admissions process.

Pre-enrollment Requirements

If admitted, enrollment is contingent upon successful completion of immunization screening, immigration status clearance, documentation of BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification, documentation of Texas Nursing Licenseand clearance of the mandatory criminal background check and drug screening.
