RN to BSN Admissions Requirements

Minimum Admissions Requirements for the RN-BSN at UTHealth

Per the regulations defining the amount of allowable online course credits, UTHealth is unable to sponsor RN-BSN students requiring an F-1 visa.Additionally, students must personally reside in the state of Texas before the first day of class.

  • An associate’s degree or diploma in nursing.
  • Active Texas RN license or ability to secure a license in the first semester of enrollment.
  • 2.75 GPA or higher in the required 60 hours of nursing prerequisites.
  • 3.0 or higher in the required science prerequisites.

To be considered for admission, a student must have earned at least 40 of the prerequisites at the time of application; 8 hours, of those 40 hours, must be from the science prerequisites of Human Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, or Chemistry.

Required Application Materials:

  • Online application and non-refundable $60.00 application fee.
  • Official transcript from all post-secondary institutions attended. Electronic submission is preferred. Information on how to send electronic transcripts is availableonline. Transcripts must be printed within six months of receipt.
  • A course-by-course evaluation of international credentials byEducational Credential Evaluators (ECE)for individuals with degrees/courses from outside the US.

In order to more clearly reflect the Cizik Nursing's diversity within its educational environment, the School’s admission policy makes explicit the multiplicity of factors taken into consideration in the admissions process. These admission factors are not assigned a specific weight or point value. The School of Nursing considers the totality of each application and gives consideration to severalfactors.

Acceptance to Cizik School of Nursing is contingent upon successful completion of outstanding prerequisites (if any), immunization screening, immigration status clearance,Health Care Provider Basic Life Support CPR certification, clearance of themandatory drug screening test and mandatory criminal background check. Essential Skills for Nursing

Nurses must be able to demonstrate cognitive skills in critical thinking and logical/analytical thinking. Nurses must also have psychomotor skills, including fine motor dexterity, physical strength, coordination, and proper body mechanics. Observational skills are also required, such as the ability to hear within the normal decibel range, the ability to read English in regular to extra-fine print, and the ability to palpate/auscultate. Q: How can I check the status of my application?

A: Applicants can view the status of their application inApplyUTH. Students are given access to MyUTH after they have been admitted to the program.

Q: What is rolling admission?

A: Rolling admission means that applications are reviewed as they are received; the program doesn't wait until a deadline to start reviewing. Applicants with complete applications can receive a decision before the application deadline.

Q: How are applicants notified of the decision on their application?

A: Once a decision is made,ApplyUTHis updated with the application status. An email is sent to all applicants whose status has been updated, and applicants will also receive a letter in the mail.

Q: If I do not get accepted, can I reapply?

Q: Am I able to apply to the program if I don’t have all of my prerequisites completed?

A: Yes, as long as you have at least 40 credit hours completed, with 8 hours in the hard sciences, you can apply for admission. If accepted, your admission will be contingent upon completing any outstanding prerequisites before the first day of class.

Q: If I haven’t completed all of my prerequisites by the first day of classes, can I still enroll?

A: Yes, for some courses. RN-BSN students can be conditionally admitted pending successful completion of the prerequisites by the end of the First semester. This provision is not allowed for the statistics or sciences prerequisites – those courses must be completed prior to starting the program. If the prerequisites are not completed by the time required, you may be administratively withdrawn from the program.
