SBMI Continuing Nursing Education

The School of Biomedical Informatics Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) course is much like our educational offerings in that it helps nurses learn the latest industry trends while also advancing the school’s ultimate goal: “develop advanced informatics tools to solve problems in health care.”

We invite Registered Nurses (RN) from around the country, to explore our CNE course as it is 100% online. We deliver advanced Continuing Nursing Education curriculum in an online platform, so your instruction can travel with you.

Our course strives to enhance the student’s knowledge about the applications of health IT and introduces the student to new and exciting innovations in health care. SBMI’s CNE course will allow nurses to apply their years of clinical and patient care in the innovative informatics industry.


Intro to Informatics for Nurses

The goal of this course is to deliver an enhanced understanding of population health management, care coordination, data analytics, value-based purchasing, and patient-centered care; as well as provide hands-on experience with data analysis and associated skills.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the definitions and perspectives related to population health, and provide an overview of the potential health IT applications in population health.
  2. Identify various data sources used for population health management including both traditional and non-traditional data sources, and examine how data quality affects population health analytics.
  3. Describe key elements for transforming to team-based care, identify types of team-based interventions, and implement multi-disciplinary care planning.
  4. Summarize federal policy to protect health information for care coordination, discuss challenges related to policy implementation, and provide examples of tools and techniques for evaluation of compliance.
  5. Relate the importance and describe the concept of patient-driven care coordination and list ways that technology can be used to drive care decisions.
  6. Discuss key concepts associated with value-based care and the role of health IT in value-based care.
  7. Discuss a variety of new care delivery models for value-based care.
  8. Define patient-centered care coordination, discuss best practice tools and emerging models for care coordination, distinguish care coordination roles and responsibilities, and identify stakeholders.
  9. Describe different types of data generated in health care.
  10. Practice data analysis skills.
  11. Communicate data analysis results.
  12. Examine data and the presentation of data related to the patient experience, especially patient satisfaction and patient-reported outcomes.

Refund/Cancellation Policy

The School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI) will NOT consent to processing any refunds unless it qualifies as an acceptable reason. Examples of acceptable reasons include an extended illness or family emergency. A refund request notification should be formally submitted toSBMICE@uth.tmc.eduand must be accompanied by verifiable documentation of an emergency. Examples of verifiable documentation include Emergency Room documentation or a link to an obituary for a family member.

If the criteria specified above is met, SBMI will refund only up to 50% of the enrollment price due to refund processing fees. SBMI will only review refund requests from currently enrolled individuals. Individuals asking for refunds whose enrollments have passed will be dismissed.

Reasons such as too much work, computer problems, do not have time, etc. are considered unacceptable reasons for a refund.
