Poonam is a PhD student at the School of Biomedical Informatics. She has a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and an M.S. in Microbiology from the University of Texas Medical Branch. Her previous research was in the subjects of virology and computational microbiology, and this led to her interest in bioinformatics. As an SGO member, her goal is to foster social interactions between SBMI students, professors, and other professionals in the field, with the understanding that we live in a society that has been changed by the ongoing pandemic. "I've found it difficult to attend many events and to feel like I am a part of the SBMI community, as someone with a young child that has been social distancing for over a year. I know there are other students in similar situations, so I aim to host a variety of events that will allow for all students, regardless of where they are in their career or life to be engaged with the community." You can reach Poonam atPoonam.N.Desai@uth.tmc.eduif you have any questions or suggestions.
