At UTHealth SBMI you can be a part of the health care revolution by earning yourMaster of Science Degree in Biomedical Informatics. With two flexible program tracks, including a fully online option, SBMI provides you with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver innovative solutions to real-world problems in health information technology.

    Traditional Research Track:

Become a leader in the field of biomedical informatics. While completing this program, students will gain solid understanding of the various aspects of biomedical informatics, as well as in-depth knowledge in focus areas of their choosing. This track focuses on the acquisition of health care data and how it is used to support clinical decision making, making it a key factor in the future of health care.

The traditional research track culminates in a capstone project that allows students to apply learned skills in a real-world setting.

    Applied Biomedical Informatics Track:

This fully online program focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to implement, maintain and evaluate electronic health records (EHRs) and related health information systems. Students will learn about the modern U.S. health care system, health care legislation, standards, health information security protocols, health data analytics, clinical decision support and project management.

The applied track culminates in a capstone project that allows students to apply learned skills in a real-world setting.

Both tracks require 39 semester credit hours to complete. Upon completion of either track, students will receive aMaster of Science in Biomedical Informatics. All semester credit hours earned in the master's programs are transferrable to thedoctoral program.

  • Doctorate in Health Informatics Program
    Apply Now Button

The Doctorate in Health Informatics program is the nation’s first terminal degree in health informatics. This practice doctorate is for professionals with documented executive or management-level healthcare experience. Students will explore how to translate evidence from original research, evaluate current practices, and utilize critical thinking to accelerate the adoption of best informatics practices in clinical and healthcare organizations.

Through both online classes and campus visits, students will examine evidence from original clinical and informatics research and apply it in a real-world scenario to enhance organizational and clinical practices. Rather than write a dissertation for the culminating project, the DHI program requires a large-scale translational project that students must complete in a healthcare organization.

The DHI degree program requires 63 hours for students who already hold a master’s degree in health informatics, or a related field. Students without the master’s degree must complete 33 semester credit hours of didactic coursework before starting the DHI curriculum.
