Abstract:

Diabetes impact in the U.S. has been well defined and reviewed within academic published works. Despite the importance in the management of care for pre-diabetic patients and patients diagnosed with diabetes, there is a lack of relevant study and of a comprehensive literature review on visualization tools and applications within this domain. This academic review will focus on literature within information visualization of diabetes care management for the individual patient and population health interventions. Relevant articles, from 2005-2014, were extracted from online resources and grouped by applications designed for the individual or population. Attention is given to visualization tools that handle multiple patient variables in the presentation, provide interactive capabilities available to the end-user and the cognitive processing factors involved with the use of the application. Additional research is necessary in order to gather a more in-depth review on interactive information visualizations within diabetes care management.
