Dr. Muhammad Walji is the associate dean for technology services and informatics and a professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry. His research interests are focused on using informatics approaches to improve the quality and safety of oral health.

He serves as the principal investigator of an NIDCR-funded study titled, "Developing a Patient Safety System for Dentistry," which has the goal of identifying adverse events in dentistry. He also serves as co-investigator on two additional NIDCR grants focused on the development and dissemination of a standardized dental diagnostic terminology called the EZCodes. He leads a multi-institutional team that has developed theBigMouth Dental Data Repository, which currently contains de-identified data on more than 1 million patients, derived from EHRs from five dental schools. BigMouth is available to faculty, residents and students to conduct oral health research.

Dr. Walji also collaborates with theUTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics, where he serves as associate director of the National Center for Cognitive Informatics and Decision-Making in Healthcare (NCCD). The center seeks to support improvements in the quality, safety and efficiency of health care through advanced information technology.

He is a member of the American Medical Informatics Association, Health Information Management Systems Society, American Dental Education Association and the Consortium for Oral Health Research and Informatics.
