Biography

Dr. Roughneen is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. He is a graduate of Leicester University Medical School in England and completed his General Surgery at UTHealth McGovern Medical School. Thereafter, he trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Texas Heart Institute (THI) under the mentorship of Dr. Denton Cooley and later undertook an Advanced Fellowship in Congenital Heart Surgery at the hospital for sick children in London. He has received an Executive Master of Business Administration degree in healthcare from the University of Tennessee Haslam school of business. He is board-certified in thoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Roughneen leads the University of Texas cardiac surgery quality collaborative founded in 2020, which unites cardiac surgery quality and research initiatives between UTHealth Houston, UTHealth San Antonio, UT Southwestern, and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

Dr. Roughneen has had previous academic appointments at Loyola University in Chicago, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (UTMB). He was an Associate Chief Medical Officer during his tenure at UTMB. Dr. Roughneen has authored over 60 publications and has a special focused interest in, minimally invasive valve surgery, mechanical circulatory support, adult congenital heart surgery, and quality initiatives in cardiac surgery. He is a fellow of the royal college of surgeons England, a member of the American College of Surgeons, the society of thoracic surgery, the Cooley hands society, the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Society, and the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation.

In his spare time, Dr. Roughneen enjoys working out at the gym, golf, tennis, soccer, and traveling.
