Dr. Mya Schiess is the director of UTHealth MOVE, UTHealth Neurosciences’ Movement Disorders and Neurodegenerative Diseases Program. She sees patients from young adults to seniors, and her clinical interests include medical and surgical management of Parkinson’s disease, tremor states, dystonia, ataxia, neurodegenerative diseases, and spasticity.

Dr. Schiess’ goal is to provide the most comprehensive care for her patients and their families by personalizing the best medical, surgical, and physical therapies available. She works with local support groups and therapy providers and tailors her care and management to the needs of the individual, with the goal of maintaining her patients at their highest level of function. Dr. Schiess believes that knowledge is power; she takes the time to educate patients, family members, and caregivers.

Dr. Schiess is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, with double bachelor’s degrees in experimental psychology and physiology. She received her medical degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, where she was inducted into
Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She completed neurology residency training and fellowship training in neurophysiology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and a second fellowship in neurophysiology at The University of Texas Medical Branch at
Galveston.

Dr. Schiess is actively involved in clinical and translational research in regenerative neurology with stem cell therapies for Parkinsonian syndromes and in neuromodulation with deep brain stimulation.

She is an active member of several professional organizations and serves on the medical advisory board for the Houston Area Parkinson Society. She has received numerous awards and honors during her medical career.
