Dr. Matthew Harting is an Associate Professor at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) in the Department of Pediatric Surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery, pediatric surgery and surgical critical care. A Texas native, Dr. Harting grew up in the Austin area and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in the Dean’s Scholars Honors program in the College of Natural Sciences. He received his medical degree, as well as a master of science in clinical research, from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and completed his surgical residency at the University of Michigan. During his surgical training, he completed an NIH T32 and T15 sponsored clinical, translational, and basic science research fellowship in adult stem cell therapies and trauma. An additional post-graduate fellowship was completed in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Washington Seattle Children’s Hospital and he completed a Surgical Critical Care fellowship at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Dr. Harting is board certified in Surgery and Pediatric Surgery.

Dr. Harting is a clinical and basic-translational scientist with interests in pulmonary disease and stem cell biology. His primary research is focused on congenital diaphragmatic hernia and the concomitant pulmonary pathophysiology. He is investigating novel, cell-based therapies as treatment strategies for congenital pulmonary disease. Additionally, he is involved in the Center for Surgical Trials and Evidence Based Practice.

Research Information

Matthew T. Harting, MD, MS, Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia

Matthew T. Harting, MD, MS, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at McGovern Medical School, focuses on pulmonary disease and stem cell biology in children. His research focuses on congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a birth defect that creates a hole in the diaphragm in one out of 2,500 children and leads to abnormal blood vessels in the lungs.
