Research Description

Dr. Chattopadhyay studies the role of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and specific genetic mutations in SMCs in the development of atherosclerosis. His research has demonstrated that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced unfolded protein response (UPR) drives the phenotypic switching of SMCs to a modulated cell expressing inflammatory, fibroblast and stem cell marker genes that significantly increases the atherosclerotic plaque burden. Using multiple mouse and in vitro systems, Dr. Chattopadhyay investigates the underlying mechanisms of atherosclerosis to identify potential therapeutic targets.
