The mission of the ten Broeke Family Foundation UTHealth Cardiovascular Electrophysiology Program at McGovern Medical School is to provide the highest quality of education and training in Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM-pacemakers/defibrillators), Electrophysiology (3D mapping/ablations), and Structural Heart Disease for individuals interested in technical specialist positions in the medical device industry or hospital/physician setting.

In pursuit of this mission, the Cardiovascular Electrophysiology Training Program:

  • offers educational experiences encompassing the breadth and depth of core knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for eligibility to take the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) examination.
  • provides training in cognitive and technical skills necessary for not only practicing in the electrophysiology profession, but also becoming leaders in the field.

What are Cardiac Device or Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialists?

Cardiac Device Specialists:

A medical technologist responsible for assisting the physician during the implantation of a Pacemakers, Implantable Defibrillators, Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Devices or Implantable Loop Recorders in the Cardiac Catheterization or Electrophysiology Lab, hospital setting or physician office. In addition, the technologists assist the physician and their support staff in the follow-up and troubleshooting of the Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Device in order to provide safe and effective therapy.

A medical technologist responsible for assisting the physician during Electrophysiology studies, basic ablation procedures as well as complex ablations such as Atrial Fibrillation and Ventricular Tachycardia that require 3D Anatomical mapping.


Structural Heart Clinical Specialist:

A medical technologist responsible for assisting the physician during case planning, imaging, and case support of devices used to treat structural heart disease such as aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation.

Cardiac Device, Electrophysiology, and Structural Heart Clinical Specialist should be people-oriented as they will be working with patients as well as working directly with the nursing staff, anesthesiologists, cardiac and pulmonary surgeons, surgical technicians and other allied health professionals.

A Cardiac Device or Electrophysiology Specialists is required to:

  • Concentrate for long periods of time while keeping a record of the patient’s parameters during the operative procedure
  • Notify the implanting physician immediately of any changes, and be prepared to respond quickly to the physician’s requests;
  • Be detail-oriented, follow instructions thoroughly, and respond well to emergency situations; and
  • Work well under pressure, be able to work well independently, and assist with post-operative support concerning the patient

Why Is this course different?

Welcome to the ten Broeke Family Foundation EP Heart Cardiovascular Electrophysiology program. This inaugural program first opened its doors in January 2018. Through our affiliation with McGovern Medical School, we have access to some of the top people in the field of electrophysiology. Located in Houston’s Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world, our program offers access to some of the top Electrophysiologists through our affiliation with McGovern Medical School.

We offer pacing, electrophysiology, and structural heart in a six-month program.Other programs offer both pacing and electrophysiology but are longer or are six months but only offer pacing. To get the best of both worlds, we give you both fields in an intensive, power-packed program.We are the only program to offer a structural heart curriculum.

As part of our program, students complete clinical rotations at one of the nation’s leading hospitals–the Memorial Hermann System.You’ll be working with top clinicians in some of the world’s busiest and best hospitals, hospitals that are known for using the latest technology.
