July 18, 2019Hello, No one said medical school was easy. There is so much to learn over the course of four years—including preparing for a career landscape of science and medicine and healthcare that is ever changing. Medical school is incredibly rigorous and can be stressful for even the most prepared students. For the last 29 years, McGovern Medical School has offered a supplemental 4-week academic program for incoming first-year medical students, the Pre-Entry Program. The program serves to strengthen academic preparation by exposure to rigorous short courses covering first-year course content. The program goes beyond the topics to be learned. Supplementary tutorial sessions, stress management, study-skills workshops, and networking with upper classmen and faculty round out the program. The students also have an opportunity to become familiar with the medical school environment before the official start to the academic year. This summer, 30 students participated, six of whom are incoming Baylor College of Medicine students. Three tutors – two rising MS2s, Carson Savrick and Katie Stebbins, and a rising MS4 from Baylor, Gabriel Bustamante, provided invaluable assistance to the students. We are fortunate to have dedicated faculty and staff teach every year. They include, Dr. Jeffrey Actor, Dr. John Byrne, Dr. Nathan Carlin, Dr. Phillip Carpenter, Dr. Shane Cunha, Dr. Diane Edmondson, Dr. Alex Gorfe, Ms. Marcy Hamburger, Dr. LaTanya Love, Dr. John Putkey, Dr. Tara Tuchaai, Dr. Marion Zahn, and Dr. Han Zhang. A wonderful social evening at the home of Drs. Patricia and Ian Butler is a special treat. We are grateful to Dr. Butler and her team, with a special thank you to Ms. Erin Bodeker, the program’s coordinator and to Dr. Phillip Carpenter, the academic director. Please join me in congratulating the team for another successful summer—setting students on a path to medical school success. Warm regards, Barbara P.S.Attached请查收tha《波士顿环球报》的一篇文章t chronicles women’s contributions to the lunar landing and moon walk as we celebrate the 50th anniversary this week. |
