Application Process

Applicants for residency in orthopedic surgery will be selected via the National Resident Match Program (NRMP). All applications are handled through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston, Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program provides 5 years of accredited graduate medical education fulfilling the educational requirements of the ABOS and the ACGME. Following the initial year of general medicine and surgical exposure (including six months of orthopedics), each resident is taken through a four year curriculum of increasing responsibility and subspecialty exposure within the field of orthopedic surgery. Specifically, the program has a designated 4 week block of simulation training for the PGY1 year as well as cadaveric milestone simulation training for the PGY 2 to 5 years. The didactic educational program is a 2 year rotating curriculum developed and presented by national and international experts in the orthopedic subspecialties. Due to the large population of the Houston area, a wide range of both common and complex problems provides the resident with an ample appropriately supervised clinical experience to graduate from the program being competent in all aspects of general orthopedic surgery.

Residency Application Screening and Interview Process

For the upcoming 20212- 2023 Academic Year, ERAS has opened up submissions beginning on September 1, 2021. Update emails via ERAS are sent out to applicants periodically through the screening process, including invitations for interview scheduling.

Applications are screened by a group of 6-8 staff with about 50-60 applicants being invited for interviews. The goal of the committee is to select applicants to interview who they feel will flourish in the orthopedic residency training vision at UTHealth.

This year our interview process will be conducted all virtual. We will offer prerecorded facility tours, introductions to our program, and other materials to help applicants get an accurate picture of our department and program.

We are participating in the AOA Universal Interview Offer Day and we will send out invitations on Monday, November 15th. More information on the Universal Interview Offer Day can be found here:https://www.aoassn.org/universal-interview-offer-day-2021-2022/

Interviews will be conducted on January 13th and January 14th, 2022
