Course Overview

Addiction is a complex brain disease that affects millions of Americans with far-reaching and devastating consequences. Scientific research over the years has advanced our understanding of the neurobiology of addiction and its treatment, using an array of effective behavioral and pharmacological interventions. Despite significant advances, the vast majority of people in need fail to receive treatment that is based on scientific knowledge. No other medical condition is treated this way.

2022年休斯顿成瘾障碍会议will address critical gaps that exist between science and practice in the field of drug addiction. Primary care is often the first entry point for patients with substance use disorders. Experts will talk about models for integrating addiction medicine into primary care, along with efforts to improve substance abuse education and training for medical students, physicians, and other health care professionals. Other novel models for closing the gap will be showcased, including integration of addiction treatment with behavioral health care services for people experiencing homelessness, with co-occurring mental health conditions, or living with or affected by HIV. It often takes years for research findings to affect treatment delivery. We will present results from recent clinical trials revealing promising new medications and behavioral therapies for treating substance use disorders for tobacco, alcohol, stimulants and opioids.

This Conference is intended to help narrow the gaps in communication by bringing together researchers, clinicians, and policymakers – all who share the goal of improving addiction treatment outcomes.
