Free Counseling

Getting help with the effects of substance use, mental health, or trauma related incidents can be a major hurdle on the path to recovery for clients. Whether through a general lack of knowledge of available resources, fear, or embarrassment, only one in 10 people who need treatment receive it.

If you or someone you know has a current or past history of substance abuse, and would like to begin recovery or safe using practices, the HEARTS@UTHealth program is available.

The HEARTS@UTHealth program, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) aims to bring awareness and relief to clients, with free counseling to address substance use, which is client-centered, and may address trauma and other mental health conditions, if necessary.

The program uses Motivational Interviewing to help clients set goals and address the difficulties associated with behavioral change. With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Seeking Safety, individuals develop skills to cope with their issues and increase resiliency as they work towards their goals.

For clients with opioid or alcohol use disorders, medication assisted treatment (MAT). MAT offers FDA approved medications for clients who could benefit from treatment, but do not have a means of obtaining the medication.

Free Testing

An important goal of the HEARTS@UTHealth program is to decrease the incidence of new HIV/HCV diagnoses. Individuals who engage in substance use or risky sexual behaviors, or clients with mental health conditions are at a greater risk of acquiring HIV or HCV infections.

The HEARTS@UTHealth program offers free testing for HIV of HCV infections, as well on education for preventing the likelihood of contracting the infections and counseling to raise awareness of risky behaviors that put individuals at risk.

Through the HEARTS@UTHealth program, individuals who are currently aware of their status can also be reconnected to care with medical providers for treatment with HIV and Hepatitis.

The program also offers a combined Hepatitis A & B Vaccination.

Whether dealing with the effects of substance use, mental health, or trauma related incidents, it is important to remember that help is always available. HEARTS@UTHealth remains at the forefront of these services by offering case management services for individuals with limited financial resources in order to get the care that they desperately need.
