The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) awarded over $6 million to researchers with UTHealth Houston to aid in cancer prevention research. These awards will expand liver cancer prevention to persons experiencing homelessness, facilitate communication about the HPV vaccine, and find therapeutics that can help destroy gastrointestinal cancer cells.

Cui Tao, PhD, professor at UTHealth Houston School of Biomedical Informatics, has been awarded $1.3 million to develop an interactive conversational agent to enhance HPV vaccine awareness. For the HPV vaccine to be effective, patients need to complete the two- to three-dose series. Currently, the completion rates for the HPV vaccine for adolescents in the United States population is 48.6%, short of the 80% uptake goal.”

John Rasmussen, PhD, assistant professor at the Institute for Molecular Medicine at McGovern Medical School, will use a nearly $1 million grant to integrate and validate the use of computer vision technology into the near-infrared fluorescence lymphatic imaging (NIRFLI) system to scan and quantify areas of lymphatic dysfunction in patients with head and neck cancers to guide and monitor response to physiotherapy.
