NCATS STTR Funding Opportunities Open for Academic Researchers & Entrepreneurs

Posted May 24, 2018: TheNational Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS)at the National Institutes of Health invites researchers at academic institutions to apply forSmall Business Technology Transfer (STTR)support to commercialize innovations. The next application deadline is Sept. 5, 2018, 5:00 p.m. local time. STTR programs are one of the largest sources of early-stage technology financing in the U.S.

NCATS is interested in the development of innovative tools, technologies and intervention (drug, device, diagnostic) platforms that would support the creation of novel therapeutics. The NCATS SBIR & STTRresearch prioritiesinclude:

STTR计划的目的是基金合作research and development projects involving a small business and a research institution, i.e., nonprofit college or university, federally funded research and development center, or domestic nonprofit research organization. Program support helps bridge the gap between performance of basic science and commercialization of resulting innovations. Applicants can apply for Phase I or Phase II funding.

Phase I:
The objective is to establish the technical merit and feasibility of the proposed research and development efforts and to determine the quality of performance of the small business prior to providing further federal support in Phase II.Phase I support is typically $150,000 provided over a period of six months. However, with proper justification, applicants may propose longer periods of time and greater funding amounts necessary to establish the technical merit and feasibility of the proposed project, up $225,000 in total costs for one year.

Phase II:
The objective is to continue the research and development efforts initiated in Phase I. Awards are typically $1 million over two years. With justification and a commercialization plan, applicants may propose funding up to $1.5 million in total costs.

Benefits of Applying:

  • Funding is stable, predictable and not a loan
  • Capital is non-dilutive
  • Small businesses retain intellectual property rights
  • NIH’s rigorous peer-review provides recognition, validation and visibility to early-stage companies
  • Prestige associated with these awards can help attract more funding or other support (e.g., venture capital, strategic partners)
