The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is dedicated to the highest level of education and research. THE IDEAL CHOICE FOR EDUCATION & TRAINING IN THE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES

The partnership creating MD Anderson UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) combines research from the top hospital fighting against cancer and a medical university studying major diseases that impact human health and quality of life. Under the tutelage of leading scientists, students study some of the most significant areas in biomedical science, including genetics, immunology, stem cells, neuroscience and cancer. Research expenditures of GSBS faculty totaled over $476 million, and combined, UTHealth and MD Anderson, ranked 25th amongst NIH research funded institutions.

Alumna Kristine Ferrone, PhD, has survived Mars – or a simulation of the Red Planet, anyway.

During her third year as Graduate School doctoral student in the Medical Physics graduate program, Ferronewho graduated in 2020, conducted research into radiation shielding that she believed could yield benefits for future astronaut pioneers exploring beyond low-Earth orbit, as well as cancer patients on Earth.

“Human space flight is what I’ve been doing my whole career," said Ferrone.

年代he hopes to be accepted into NASA’s astronaut program one day and expects the addition of a PhD to her qualifications to significantly increase her chances.
