Epilepsy

More than three million Americans have epilepsy, about 65,000 of whom live in Houston. While some are seizure-free, others experience seizures that can cause significant injuries and even death. For the nearly 20,000 Houstonians with epilepsy who do not respond to current treatment options, their seizures remain uncontrolled.

The Many Faces of UTHealth are tackling epilepsy to bring new possibilities to thousands in our community and millionsmore worldwide.

TIRN - visiting patient

Our experts make progress every day through the Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. As a level 4 National Association of Epilepsy Centers program, it ranks among the most advanced epilepsy centers inthe country.

We recently expanded our reach by launching the Texas Institute for Restorative Neurotechnologies (TIRN) in an effort to enhance collaboration across UTHealth’s six schools and accomplish more for patients. The integration of clinical programs, research, and academic training have the potential to make TIRN the nation’s foremost program for epilepsy and other chronic neurological disorders—offering patients relief in the form of cutting-edge diagnostic tools, therapies, and surgeries.

Our experts are doing important work:

  • We are pioneering surgical treatments for epilepsy, such as pinpointing the sources of seizures with fine electrode probes and using laser surgery to eliminate them.
  • We are offering compassionate care as we address complex, difficult-to-treat epilepsy cases through medical and surgical treatments.
  • We are harnessing big data and artificial intelligence, bringing the power of data analytics to make faster diagnoses and better manage epilepsy cases.
  • We are educating tomorrow’s leaders, who will continue our tradition of excellence in treating epilepsy.

Through synergy in research, care, and education—fueled by donor generosity—UTHealth is launching the field of epilepsy to the next level. Your support ofMany Faces. One Mission.can help define the next chapter of precision medicine in clinical neuroscience and make UTHealth a worldwide destination for patients seeking relief from epilepsy.

  • Faculty Support

The ability to recruit and retain brilliant researchers and clinicians made it possible to achieve what we’ve achieved in this space. Creating endowed faculty funds will help us continue to attract and retain the best clinicians, educators, and researchers in the field, offering a sustainable source of support for the research that leads to better care.

From providing relief for people living with drug-resistant epilepsy, to modeling the neural network that gives human beings the ability to read, to understanding the neurobiology behind human speech, what comes next in neuroscience comes from UTHealth. Seed funding for promising lines of inquiry and funding to support current work is critical to continued progress.

  • Education

The graduates of our schools take their knowledge and expertise wherever they go. Scholarships and fellowships help us expand our outreach programs to promising students, giving them the resources to apply this cross-disciplinary approach in neuroscience to improve epilepsy care in our communities.
