Applicant Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

问:Do you offer observerships in the department?
A: No, we do not offer observerships within our department.

问:What are your cutoffs for USMLE scores and years since medical school graduation?
A: We do not use strict numerical cutoffs when evaluating applicants, although we prefer that applicants pass exams on the first try, score 80 or above on all parts, and have fewer than 10 years since graduation from medical school. If these criteria are not met, applicants may still be considered for interview if they show considerable ability in other categories.

问:Is US clinical experience required of applicants? What about pathology experience?
A: US clinical experience is not an interview prerequisite, but it can provide the international applicant with valuable insight into the US healthcare system. We do recommend that applicants spend time in a pathology department to really understand the role that the pathologist plays in patient care.

问:Can you tell me if I will be invited for an interview if I email or fax you my CV before I apply?
A: Unfortunately, no. The formal application process is the only mechanism by which CV’s and other documents can be reviewed.

问:During what months and on which days of the week do you interview?
A: Our interview season runs from November through January. This year we will be conducting virtual interview only as face-to-face interviews have been discouraged due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During virtual interview season, we will interview from Monday through Friday, except on major holidays and UTHealth observed holidays. Our virtual interviews will be conducted via VidCruiter. Detailed information will be provided to candidates on invitations shared via email.

问:How do I find out the status of my application?
A: If you are invited to interview, you will receive an invitation via email. It is very important that you provide a valid email address in ERAS that you check frequently. Please do not call the department inquiring about the status of your application. Likewise, there is no need to email us about updated USMLE scores or to notify us that you submitted an application.

问:How many positions will you be offering through the match?
A: There are a total of 28 accredited residency positions. Our first-year positions are filled exclusively through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Trainees typically pursue a course leading to certification in both anatomical and clinical pathology. The number of first year positions vary from year to year, and we often do not make a final decision until shortly before the NRMP quota deadline in late January. Typically, we offer between four to eight positions per year.

问:I am currently working in the US on an H1-B visa. Will your program allow me to transfer it for residency training?
A: No, the University does not sponsor the H1-B visa for incoming residents. There are no exceptions. The J-1 visa is the only visa that UTHealth accepts for resident physicians.
