Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Helminiak received a bachelor’s of science in biology and graduated summa cum laude from St. Mary’s University in 2007. Afterwards, she earned a doctor of medicine degree from The University of Texas Medical School at Houston (now known as McGovern Medical School at UTHealth) in 2011. She then returned to her hometown for the general adult psychiatry residency at UTHealth San Antonio. She completed her training in 2015 and was a chief resident during her final year. After graduating she ventured back to Houston and began her new faculty position.
