Liver Cancer Prevention Among Those with Experiences of Homelessness: An Expansion to Low-Income Housing in South Texas

A nearly $2 million grant has been awarded to Vanessa Schick, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Management, Policy and Community Health at UTHealth School of Public Health in Houston; and Jack Tsai, PhD, professor and dean of UTHealth School of Public Health in San Antonio, to lead an expansion of the program called GRASSROOTS HEALTH.

This is an innovative program in Houston and San Antonio that aims to eliminate barriers to education, testing, and treatment for hepatitis B and C among individuals at risk of homelessness. GRASSROOTS HEALTH has provided services to hundreds of individuals at risk of homelessness in Houston with existing partners at New Hope Housing and Healthcare for the Homeless Houston. This grant will allow researchers to expand the program to veterans and the South Texas region.

Cui Tao, PhD, professor at UTHealth Houston School of Biomedical Informatics, has been awarded $1.3 million to develop an interactive conversational agent to enhance HPV vaccine awareness. Unlike the familiar voice agents like Apple Siri or Amazon Alexa that implement a simple adjacency pairing interaction and requires user initiation, researchers will use a dialogue system that enriches a speech-enabled software agent to have prolonged, consistent, and lightweight counseling with a health consumer where the agent drives the conversation about the HPV vaccine.

“Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections cause about 34,000 cases of cancers every year in the U.S.,” Tao said. “A previous study reported that if the population were to have 70% coverage of the HPV vaccine, at least 4 million deaths worldwide could be prevented in the next decade. For the HPV vaccine to be effective, patients need to complete the two- to three-dose series. Currently, the completion rates for the HPV vaccine for adolescents in the United States population is 48.6%, short of the 80% uptake goal.”

Simultaneous Targeting of LGR4/5/6 for the Treatment of Gastrointestinal Cancer

John Rasmussen, PhD, assistant professor at the Institute for Molecular Medicine at McGovern Medical School, will use a nearly $1 million grant to integrate and validate the use of computer vision technology into the near-infrared fluorescence lymphatic imaging (NIRFLI) system to scan and quantify areas of lymphatic dysfunction in patients with head and neck cancers to guide and monitor response to physiotherapy.

“Head and neck cancers are the seventh most prevalent cancer worldwide, and despite the declining use of tobacco products associated with its incidence, the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) may be the reason why these cancers are rising worldwide and, in the U.S.,” said Rasmussen.
