Educational Awards

2022 Application Period is now CLOSED

The University Classified Staff Council (UCSC) has established and annually administers the Educational Award Program for children of full-time UTHealth classified employees. The purpose is to identify and honor high school students and to aid as many as possible. We will begin accepting applications March 1, 2022. The deadline for all application documents to be submitted has now passed.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must meet all requirements below and submit a complete application packet:

  • Be a student who is completing high school and will be beginning their college career the coming fall.
  • Be a child of full-time UTHealth classified employee (who has worked full-time for at least the prior year at UTHealth) are eligible to compete for this award.
  • Enter an accredited U.S. college the following fall semester as a full-time student and pursue a course of study leading to either an associate or baccalaureate degree.
  • Include a letter of acceptance from an accredited U.S. school (required when the application is submitted).

Requirements of students applying for an award:

  • UCSC Educational Award application
  • SAT or ACT score
  • GPA (must be on a 4.0 scale)

  • A record or description of volunteerism, awards, honors, or extracurricular activities at the school or community level
  • A letter of acceptance from an accredited university or college
  • Letters of reference from two professionals (teacher, employer, etc.), cannot be a relative

Recipient Selection

An impartial committee will select the recipient(s) by evaluating each eligible student's redacted application packet.

Applications are judged on:

  1. Preparedness to begin college
  2. Evidence of prior scholastic achievement
  3. Clearly-stated educational objectives and career goals
  4. Evidence of volunteerism, awards, honors, or extracurricular activities at the school or community level

Award recipient(s) will be selected without regard to financial need, and will be notified as soon as the decision is made.



FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the amount of the award?

The amount awarded to each student differs from year to year and is determined by the selection committee.

What are my obligations and responsibilities if I win?

The award recipient is required to submit a letter of acceptance of the award and proof of college acceptance prior to the disbursement. The UCSC award recipient is responsible for making admission arrangements and fulfilling all requirements of the school chosen. The college or university must be accredited and located in the United States. The winner must enter college as a full-time student in the fall term following selection.

The award recipient is expected to make normal academic progress. While honor grades are not required, award winners have a responsibility to do quality work.

Who handles the award procedures?

All phases of the competition [including selection of recipient(s), determination of the amount and presentation of the award(s)] are handled by the UCSC Educational Awards Committee. All decisions of the Committee are final.

How do I submit my high school transcript?

Please have your high school email your transcript directly toUTHealthUCSC@uth.tmc.eduor contact us for other options. Electronic transcripts are preferred.

What if my GPA isn’t on a 4.0 scale?

Reach out to your school counselor and request that they convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale.
