2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine Awarded Jointly to William Kaelin Jr, Sir Peter Ratcliffe, and Greg Semenza

Scientists William Kaelin Jr, Sir Peter Ratcliffe, and Greg Semenza were jointly awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their groundbreaking research examining the ways cells respond and change based on varying levels of oxygen in the body. These discoveries will change not only the way in which we learn and understand basic cell functions, but could potentially offer novel therapeutic pathways for treating diseases such as cancer and anemia.

The laboratories of Cynthia Ju and Holger Eltzschig, both professors from the Department of Anesthesiology at McGovern Medical School, UTHealth, have been funded by the National Institutes of Health for many years to conduct research on the role of hypoxia signaling in perioperative organ injury.
