Biography

Melissa Allen, DO,is the Chief Medical Officer at UTHealth Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC) and an attending physician on the Mood Disorders Specialty Unit. Since 2014, she has also served as the hospital’s chief of Adult Psychiatry Services. In addition to expertise in treating depression and bipolar disorder, Allen has experience in early identification of mental illness, long term stabilization measures, first break psychosis and women’s mental health.

Allen received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center and completed general psychiatry residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Since 2012, she has been a core teaching faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences where she is an associate professor. Allen regularly teaches medical students on their psychiatry clerkship and supervises residents on their rotations. For her work in education, she has been recognized with the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award three times, which honors the top 20% of teaching faculty for each department.
