Medical Physics Residency
Program Description
Our diagnostic imaging physics residency program received CAMPEP accreditation in 2017. This is a 3-year program that will provide training in both Diagnostic and Nuclear Medicine Physics. The first two years will focus primarily on Diagnostic Physics, with the third year focused on Nuclear Medicine Physics. Our program will qualify residents for board certification in both specialties.
Residents will have the opportunity to teach radiologic physics to medical radiology residents and provide in-service for two teaching hospitals, Memorial Hermann Hospital and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital. Residents will have the opportunity to work on clinical research projects and collaborate with radiologists and other physicians, if they so choose to. We encourage residents to submit original research to national conferences, and the department financially supports related expenses.
Over the last 40 years, the Division of Medical Physics has been responsible for Fundamental Physics education for Radiology Residents. We also provide didactic classroom lectures and hands-on labs to fulfill the 80 hours of initial training for radiologists to become authorized users on a NRC radioactive materials license.
Clinical Service
The Division of Medical Physics provides a wide range of clinical services to our teaching hospitals (Memorial Hermann and Lyndon B. Johnson) and various local imaging centers, which includes but is not limited to:
- Image quality assurance, practice quality improvement, equipment performance and acceptance testing
- Medical imaging risk and safety management
- Facility planning (including shielding design & verification)
- Imaging protocol development, management, and support
- Regulatory compliance
- Accreditation support
The imaging equipment inventory at our service sites includes: 15+ mammography, 120+ radiographic, 140+ dental, 35+ computed tomography, 140+ fluoroscopy, 7 MRI, 10+ SPECT and SPECT/CT, and 2 PET/CT systems. The equipment inventory includes systems from each of the major vendors.
