Occupational Safety and Fire Prevention
The mission of the Occupational Safety and Fire Prevention Program is to help provide a safe and
healthy place of learning and work for all UTHealth faculty, employees, students, residents and
visitors. We perform routine surveillance of UTHealth buildings and grounds to anticipate,
recognize, evaluate and control physical hazards and to ensure compliance with fire and life safety
code requirements. Through these proactive efforts we aim to minimize the occurrence of accidents
and injuries on our campus. OSFP provides a variety of services including reviewing fire
protection systems to ensure they are working as designed, as well as occupational hazard
monitoring, responding to incidents, and performance of incident investigations as necessary.
15 Second Delayed Egress door
A 15 second delayed egress door is a door that has a magnetic device that will keep a door locked for 15 seconds before it will allow the door to open. Delayed egress doors are installed primarily for security. They prevent a door from being opened immediately from the inside. This type of device is used on campus to prevent theft. They are in most of the buildings on campus, are tested annually by EH&S, and they are code compliant. For more information on the operation on these doors please watch the video below.
