Mary Ellen Ross is an associate professor in the Department of Nursing Systems.Her primary teaching responsibility is Gerontology and Community Health.She has taught in the undergraduate and graduate programs. Her research focus is stress, burden and health in custodial grandparents and other kinship caregivers. She also is interested in gerontological issues related to community health and health promotion. She serves as a faculty research mentor for undergraduate BSN honor students.

Ross has published in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, and has given numerous presentations about her research on aging, and other topics. She is a peer reviewer for a number of nursing and interprofessional journals. She is an active member of a number of national, state and local professional organizations.

The Texas Nurses Association (TNA) District 9, named Ross one of “20 Outstanding Nurses of 2010.” The honorees were chosen by their peers and co-workers as exemplary registered nurses in the Houston/Galveston area. She was a Houston Chronicle “Salute to Nurses” honoree in 2016. The top 150 nurses in the area were selected by a panel of educators and leaders in the nursing field for their extraordinary work.

Ross was awarded the first PARTNERS Research Scholar Endowment (2011-14).

Ross received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from McNeese State University before earning both her Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Public Health at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Her master's specialization was in Gerontology and doctoral focus was Community Practice. She is certified as a Gerontological Clinical Nurse Specialist.
