Chao Hsing Yeh, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a master of auricular medicine. Dr. Yeh's research program focuses on advancing the science of non-pharmacological pain treatments, with a special focus on the mechanisms, efficacy, and implementation of auricular point acupressure (APA) to manage pain and cancer-related symptoms. The populations include adults and older adults with chronic pain, cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced neuropathy and symptoms, and patients with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders and their caregivers. Yeh has provided APA training workshop for oncology nurses at the front line of patient care to master the skill of APA and subsequently integrate this strategy into their clinical practice. The workshop provided the instructional environment to master the skill of APA and subsequently integrate this strategy into their real-world practice. To scale-up APA to manage pain, Yeh develops a smartphone app featuring instructional and demonstration videos as a self-guided tool to teach individuals to self-administer APA to manage their pain. Yeh is also the developer of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) app to collect real-time pain outcomes and deliver reminder to promote intervention adherence. Given the high prevalence of chronic pain and the epidemic of opioid addiction disorder in the U.S., Yeh's research presents a highly promising complementary approach to pain management that has precipitated a public health crisis. APA has the potential to revolutionize pain management and eliminate disparities in access to effective pain management nationally and globally. The significance of Yeh's work is demonstrated through fundings from National Health Institute, American Cancer Society, Oncology Nursing Foundation, and the Johnson & Johnson award.
