Stacy A Drake, Dwayne A Wolf, Janet C Meininger, Stanley Cron, Thomas Reynold, Charles E Wade, John B Holcomb. Methodology to reliably measure preventable trauma death rate.Trauma Surgery & Acute Care Open, May 2017, 2(1) e000106;DOI:10.1136/tsaco-2017-000106

Two of Drake’s coauthors –Stanley Cron, MSPH, and Professor EmeritaJanet C. Meininger博士,RN, FAAN Cizik School of Nursing faculty members. The others are affiliated with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth or Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The authors note that no national consensus prevails among varying groups of clinicians for defining preventability or documenting methods by which preventability is determined. The article describes a methodology for establishing a trauma preventable death rate (PDR) in Harris County, which has >4 million residents, encompasses a geographic area of 1,777 square miles and includes the City of Houston.

The authors adapted a military method recently used in Southwest Asia to determine the potential preventability of civilian trauma deaths occurring across a large and diverse population. The project design, the authors say, will allow a data-driven approach to improve services across the entire spectrum of trauma care, from prevention through rehabilitation.
