WOS Adjunct Faculty Appointments

Academic titles are used to designate the faculty while involved in a professional clinical experience program. Appointments to nurse practitioner (NP) preceptors will be as adjunct faculty without salary appointments (WOS).

Adjunct appointment as Professor of Clinical Nursing, Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing, Assistant Professor of Clinical Nursing, or Instructor of Clinical Nursing is used for both full- and part-time appointments for the primary purpose service activity that directly relates to teaching and/or research duties.

  • The adjunct faculty position would be at the clinical instructor level for a master’s prepared NP and assistant or associate professor for the MD/DO, PhD and DNP prepared NP and professor for PhD or DNP-prepared candidates with extensive experience, education, and/or research backgrounds.
  • 作为教师NP学生voluntary. Precepting for only one semester during the academic year is required, but the preceptor may opt to precept for more semesters if desired. The preceptor may also choose to mentor more than one student during the semester.

UTHealth School of Nursing Preceptor Requirements

  • Current Texas RN and APRN (as NP), MD/DO, or PA licenses.
  • Appropriate credentials/certifications for state and national practice.
  • Minimum one-year practice experience.
  • Willingness to participate actively in the education and evaluation of the NP student.

Preceptor Responsibilities

  • The preceptor will mentor a NP student at least once per academic year.

Semester Length and Required Hours

  • Regular semester (fall and spring) length is 15 weeks and summer session is 12 weeks.
  • NP student clinical hours depend on the semester and program curriculum. Normally, clinical time is 180-240 hours for some semester rotations and 300+ hours for end-of-program preceptorships.

  • The appropriate department designation depends on your educational and clinical background. A formal letter of recommendation for appointment will be sent to the appropriate department chair.
  • The department administrative assistant will contact you and request your resume/curriculum vitae and educational transcripts. You will also be asked to fill out a standard background check form.
  • Once approved, you will be notified with a welcome letter that outlines the required educational orientation modules required by the university.
  • The academic appointment will be reviewed for renewal on a yearly basis.
