Veteran's BSN Program

The Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth’s Veterans’ Bachelor of Science in Nursing (VBSN) program provides veterans with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to successfully complete aBachelor of Science in Nursing(BSN) at one of the top-rated nursing schools in the country. This program facilitates the transition of veterans into professional nursing while addressing their unique needs. Veterans may receive up to three credit hours of academic credit for prior military training and experience. BothPacesetter BSNandRN-BSNstudents are eligible to apply. The program was conceived and is directed byBridgette R. Pullis, PhD, RN, CHPN, associate professor of clinical nursing in the Department of Undergraduate Studies.

Application and Review Process

To apply for VBSN consideration, interested students must complete the online application for admission and indicate their military service when prompted. Once the complete application is received (including all official post-secondary and military transcripts), it will be reviewed by the admissions committee for decision. Acceptance into the VBSN program will be considered at the same time as the degree program admission. Notification of VBSN acceptance will be included in the BSN admissions notification.

Services available to VBSN students

After admission, the case manager will review the veteran’s military transcript and recommend a matriculation plan. This plan is dependent upon the veteran’s training and experience. The case manager will continue to work with the veterans from admission through graduation and will connect them with resources, provide counseling, and assist them as they reintegrate and deal with the rigors and challenges of nursing school.

A: Yes, the program is open to both groups of students.

Q: What military branches qualify for consideration?

A: The VBSN program targets veterans or active duty military personnel with medical training and experience, so all branches of the military qualify. We have had some veteran students that did not have a medical background, were very successful in our program, and graduated.

Q: Is there a time limit during which the service must have occurred?

A: There is no time limit on military service for the VBSN program.

Q: Do VBSN students receive preferential treatment in the admissions process?

A: The VBSN students must meet all admission requirements for the Cizik School of Nursing and do not receive preferential admission.

Q: Does the VBSN program include scholarship/grant assistance for veterans?

A: There is no scholarship or grant assistance, but the UTHealth veteran’s affairs office and the VBSN case manager can assist veteran students in accessing resources for veterans.

Accreditation

The baccalaureate degree program in nursing, master’s degree program, doctor of nursing practice program, and post graduate APRN certificate programs at the Cizik School of Nursing are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org).
